Interesting question :)

The API does not support the above flow.

When you duplicate a campaign, the new campaign will contain all the original items. (You can then edit/add/remove items as desired.)

We are planning to provide more fine-grained control over the duplication process - e.g. duplicate a campaign without its items. (In that case, the new campaign will have no items.)

However, even with the above feature (not yet released), I believe that adding an item would be a separate step.

PS: Do you have a strong business case for including the item creation in the duplication step? Please feel free to elaborate! :)

Yes, our campaigns are running on white-listed sites, therefore in order to scale we want to duplicate the campaigns with different creatives. in order to keep things running fast, we don't open new campaigns(that way our account manager needs to go over it manually each time). that is why we duplicate the campaigns to keep them white-listed and change the creative manually. we would like to do it via API.

also for our regular campaigns which take time to optimize and block the bad sources, we also duplicate them and change their creative manually, that way we can increase traffic with different creatives for the same optimized campaigns.

I would like to clarify a few points...

a) Re scenario A (duplicate and preserve the targeting):

Do you currently perform the duplication piece via the API?

b) Re scenario B (campaigns that take time to optimize):

If I understand correctly, you want to duplicate all the settings for the first, well-optimized campaign - and then run a new campaign, with its own creatives?

With the new API functionality (currently in the pipeline), you will be able to:

1. Duplicate a campaign, but specify that creatives should not be included.
2. Add creatives to the newly created campaign in the normal way (via the API or UI).

So it would be a 2-step operation, instead of 1 step.

But aside from that, it's pretty close to what you had in mind :)

Good news - the campaign duplication enhancements are (finally) ready: Specify campaign sections to duplicate.

You can now duplicate a campaign without its items (and then add items to the newly created campaign).

I think this would be fairly close to what you had in mind :)

Note that we now also support bulk creation of items across campaigns: Bulk create items across campaigns.
